Hmm... what did I do wrong??? I have a huge list of packages being listed as corrupted in pkgdb. The package files by themelves are Ok, its just /var/db/pkg that seems to have gone wrong. Reinstalling these packages seem to make portupgrade happy.

Radio Denon!

Vtuner.com provides an online broadcast organizer for Internet enabled devices for a fee. The Denon 3808 includes a licence to use this service via radiodenon.com. Fill up the sign up form with the AVR's MAC address and you are ready to start organizing content online.
This makes my D-Link DSM 510 obsolete in the process. Oh well, less clutter in the room!

» Denon 3808 Firmware Updating
Housekeeping is usually reserved for weekends. This saturday I cleaned up the Home Theater and updated the firmware on the beefy Denon 3808 AVR.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=995566
The official firmware updating guide worked just fine. It took a whole 50 minutes even on my 2mbit home DSL connection (the guide did say it would take a min of 35-50 mins).
What new features did I get at the end of the update??? Well... The AVR has the ability to purchase new features (over the Net) as and when they become available! :D Hopefully, this feature alone would justify the price I paid. The other addition is that I can now do config backups! Woohoo!!!
faith:~ shanu$ ls -l Denon/config.dat -rw-r--r-- 1 shanu staff 525183 Apr 5 22:04 Denon/config.dat
Speaking of the price that I paid, I chanced upon the ProFX's website who are the India Dealers for Denon. They are quoting a whopping Rs.1,05,000 for the 38080 3808. That's a freeking 45% markup over what I paid!!! ProFX... cough!!! cough!!! ripoff!!!
As usual, thanks goes to the nice guys over at The Audio Video People (Chennai) for helping me get this.
Thanks Jalal/Shahul!

» Leopard Leopard Burning Bright...
The install media IT gave me over the weekend did not work. The drive kept spitting out the DVD. I got another set of DVDs today which worked.
I reinstalled the Macbook Pro creating a 60GB partition for Leopard (saving the rest for Ubuntu and FreeBSD). Workspaces are also setup. Now I can finally use the Mac for "work" :)

» A life without virtual desktops
No virtual desktops would probably be my #1 reason to switch back to FreeBSD running e17. Now I have to pester IT into giving me the Leopard installation media. Been a very frustrating day with a single cluttered desktop.
Some of the other pain points with OS X:
Focus follows mouse for all window types. I have defaults write com.apple.terminal FocusFollowsMouse -string YES set which works for the terminal but not for other window groups. Backspace in vim send ^H. I have seen this problem with other UNIX systems before but don't remember how i worked around it. Needs STFW.
I have also been trying to install all my usual apps like cdrdao, logjam, opera, adium, deluge etc. I think fink is dead, macports seems to be the more popular way of getting to ports. IAC, I have both installed.

IT pre installed it with Tiger, need to wrestle out the Leopard installation CD from them. Finding it very odd to use only one mouse button.

3 of my favorite projects made it to the Google Summer Of Code 2008. FreeBSD and Mixxx have previously been accepted for SoC but Enlightenment had been rejected all the previous times. Enlightenment is in for the SoC 2008. W00t!!!
The Enlightenment Foundation Libraries (EFL) on which the e17 window manager is based upon has been gaining popularity among the embedded community as a performance oriented toolkit for low power devices while still being able to retain all the bling bling that one expects from a modern toolkit.

I need to list out all possible failure conditions that could happen to a project that I am working on, I have then all written out but then, its seems to be simpler to put up a diagram on how the flow works rather than a lengthy explanation of the same.

I am hooked onto Gnuplot - its so versatile when you want to parse offline data (like benchmarks) and draw graphs for visual representation. Now if only I can figure out from the arcane http://gnuplot.info/documentation.html on how to make these really pretty for the management types.

I don't think am a successful interviewer. In all the time that I have spent on the phone interviewing people, I can't remember even a single one that fit my definition of "cool". But companies need more than cool people to "chug" along.
Maybe the below article can help me identify people better. And just in time too since the hunting season begins in Feb.
